Privacy policy

DecideTonight ("we", "us", "our") operates the decidetonight.com website and web application. We provide a group decision-making tool. This Privacy Policy describes how we handle information in connection with your use of the Service.

We collect only what is necessary to provide the Service. This includes: (a) a randomly generated participant identifier stored in your browser's localStorage — this is not linked to your identity; (b) a display name you choose when joining a room, which is visible to other participants in that room; (c) your swipe votes (like, super like, pass) within a room session, stored temporarily for scoring; (d) standard server logs including IP address, browser type, and page request timestamps, retained for up to 30 days for security and diagnostics.

We do not collect: email addresses, phone numbers, passwords, payment information, location data, device identifiers, social login tokens, or any biometric data. We do not require account registration of any kind. We do not track you across other websites.

We use browser localStorage (not cookies) to store your temporary participant ID so you can rejoin an active room session. We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics cookies. Deployments may optionally send first-party, non-advertising product events (such as room creation or result sharing) to a configured analytics endpoint for reliability and product diagnostics.

We use the information we collect solely to operate the Service: matching your votes with your room session, displaying participant names within the room, and computing the group match result. We do not sell, rent, or trade your information to third parties. We do not use your information for advertising or marketing profiling.

Room data — including participant names, votes, and results — expires 24 hours after the room is created and is automatically deleted after the retention window. Server logs are purged after 30 days. Your localStorage data stays in your browser until you clear it or the room expires. There is no data to request deletion of after these retention windows expire.

The Service may fetch content from third-party APIs (such as movie database services) to populate swipe card options. These services are governed by their own privacy policies. We pass only the minimum required query parameters (e.g., genre, category) and do not share any user identifiers with them.

We implement industry-standard security measures including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, input validation on all API endpoints, and rate limiting to prevent abuse. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We encourage you not to submit sensitive personal information through room names or usernames.

The Service is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has submitted information through the Service, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

The Service is operated from the United States. If you are accessing the Service from outside the United States, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States. By using the Service, you consent to this transfer.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy with an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will make a reasonable effort to provide notice. Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
